Teeth Whitening

Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they’ve been dreaming of with our simple bleaching procedure.

Patients come to our practice for complex restorative dental care and tooth whitening is often an important part of the treatment solution. The benefits of tooth lightening are, more youthful looking teeth and a brighter smile, which always result in greater self confidence. The process is safe and relatively inexpensive.

The causes of tooth discoloration include staining from liquids such as coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, chewing tobacco, poor dental hygiene, certain antibiotics, and trauma to the teeth.

We provide tooth whitening treatments both “in office” and as a “take home” treatment. Prior to whitening, the teeth should be professionally cleaned.

How is tooth whitening done?

“In office” whitening takes one visit for instant results with the option of take home trays for the occasional touch up.

“Take home” whitening: soft impressions of the teeth are made so that we can make custom whitening trays. These can usually be ready in a day or two. The trays hold the gel that will lighten discolored tooth enamel. The trays should be worn for 2 hours per day or overnight for convenience. Tray whitening may take 2-4 weeks to achieve the desired result.

A temporary side effect of tooth whitening in some people is tooth sensitivity. This can be easily treated with a 10 minute application of fluoride.

To ensure lasting results limit drinking liquids that stain (or rinse after drinking such liquids), brush and floss daily, and schedule professional tooth cleanings every 6 months to minimize the reversal of the whitening process. “Top up” whitening with trays is suggested for 3-4 applications after each professional cleaning appointment.
